Kine Each week told you “Brand new robust ‘crooks slide out’ is peopled which have a colourful range regarding crucial and you may arresting characters, and they, skilfully manipulated because of the journalist and manager, allow the flick in order to tread drinking water efficiently. It is only to the finish that it starts to break apart, nevertheless slap-up finale rescues it on ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it has zero higher complications during the life style off its very unsightly title.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The film motions at a fast rate, this new talk is smooth and you can characterisations essentially energetic. Brand new film’s author and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess video game, having mortal limits, between Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) worked in the gambling enterprise and you can dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic script, the brand new cast’s suavely regulated body gestures off love and you will hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photo (in addition to his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a low profile antique of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, also in the score . While the patch observe a common trend, this new characterizations try new and the performances good enough to help you overbalance. Dialog try terse and you will topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touching. Uncommon digital camera bases appear on occasion so you can escalate attract and temporarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling given that director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand new journalist and you can affiliate music producer, together with aids in rendering it a silky production.” [ eleven ]

Its primarily a question of enjoying Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you’re a large cast out of stars and you will performers render him typical help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman whom brings out brand new finest in him and you can Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen just who becomes him for the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily given that villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a separate able tour due to the fact an exhausted police inspector which ultimately shuts the outcome. Many taking and you will puffing is accomplished by the the concerned.” [ twelve ]
